Where it all began:
James' love for anything that involved speed started at a very young age. James' father David was a rally driver himself and so took James on rallies at every opportunity. Up until he could reach the pedals in a car James focused his attention on motor bikes and go-karts.
From the age of 12 until 17 James competed in his local motor club autotest events. Ludlow Motor Club regularly hosted autotest's that were extremely popular with many competitors entered. Right from his very first event the 12 year old showed exceptional car control and a natural ability behind the wheel to come 2nd over all. The future looks bright!
1400 Nova:
James' first forest rally was the Sweet Lamb stages in his 1400cc Vauxhall Nova. 13th overall and first in class would give James his first trophy, with many more to follow.
At the time the BTRDA rally championship was the most competitive championship for 1400 machinery, so it was the perfect place for James to hone his talents. 3 years in the BTRDA along with events in the Kumho clubman rally championship saw James battle for every class win against top drivers like Ian Evans and Neil Weaver. Some mechanical issues and the occasional mistake that James put down to experience meant James never won the BTRDA title, but the 2004 championship went down to the wire with James and Ian Evans finishing on level points and so Ian took the spoils as he won the first event.
The 2004 season really marked James as a driver to beat and opened the doors for him to progress in 2005.
The next 3 years James drove for Suzuki in the British Rally Championship taking 2 British Titles and the occasional WRC drive too.
With James dominating the front wheel drive classes in the British Championship, 2008 saw him step up to the International class in the BRC in his Subaru Impreza N11 where even with his lack of experience James put in some fine performances.
